Description

Vest, Jason P. The Postmodern Humanism of Philip K. Dick. Lanham: Scarecrow, 2009. 227 + xx pp. Paperback. ISBN: 978-0-81908-6212-8. $50.00. Jason P. Vest's 2009 volume, The Postmodern Humanism of Philip K. Dick, began as his dissertation project at Washington University. The book contains four primary chapters, bracketed by an introduction and a conclusion. The first three chapters place Dick and his work alongside one of three twentieth-century writers, Franz Kafka, Jorge Luis Borges, and Italo Calvino. The fourth chapter uncharacteristically focuses solely on Dick and the novel Now Wait for Last Year. In the recent spate of books on Dick, Vest's seems to me to be one of the most interesting and useful. Instead of simply adding to the minutia of details about Dick, his work, and his life, Vest sets Dick's work in conversation with texts by other prominent writers, though the comparisons themselves are not entirely original.
